Spring 2016

Once again, it's been a long time since I updated this blog!  We are finishing up the school year and getting ready for summer.  Becca had a great first year of preschool.  She had wonderful teachers and made a few friends in her class.  I am so thankful that both kids love school so much and never have separation anxiety.  Until she got used to her schedule Becca would cry on the days that she didn't get to go to school.  Next year she will be moving to a different preschool.  It is closer to our house and the same preschool Ben went to.

Becca is 3 now and very mature and independent for her age (except when it comes to swinging on the swingset which she insists she can't do).  She makes up elaborate stories with her princesses and loves dressing up in costumes.  She also loves any and all crafts, especially using glue sticks!  Despite a slow start, she is finally potty-trained.  It's so strange to not have a kid in diapers.  Becca loves to play with Hannah (a little too rough sometimes) and Hannah seeks Becca out for attention.  Becca also started some basic dance classes this Spring and she loved them!  I feel like she is constantly twirling in circles at home.  She will be playing soccer in the Fall so that should be interesting!

Ben is finishing up Kindergarten and has had a great year.  He also loves school and has made some good friends.  His reading and writing have come so far this year.  He never enjoyed trying to read and sound things out and would get very frustrated.  Some day I will learn that Ben does things when he is ready and not a minute before!  He is reading like crazy now and loves it.  He did Tae Kwon Do up until he had a cast on his foot this Fall but then decided it wasn't the sport for him.  He did t-ball/baseball this Spring and really enjoyed it.  It was a pretty big time commitment so we were afraid he would get tired of it but it was a pretty successful season.  He is also going to play soccer in the fall (for the first time since he was 3!) so hopefully that will go well.

First Day of Kindergarten

Wow, I can't believe it's been almost a year since I posted in here!  Ben had his first day of Kindergarten today.  He was READY and very excited.  I talked to him last night at dinner and asked if there was anything he was nervous about or if he had any questions and he just said no and kept on eating dinner.  He had no problem going to the bus stop and ran to get on the bus with all the other kids.  I can't wait to hear how his day goes.  Becca was very sad when we got home (mostly because she wanted to go on the bus too).  Her turn will come in a couple of weeks when she starts preschool.

Ben at 5 and Becca at 19 months

As Ben likes to remind everyone, he is 5 now and he is a big kid.  He has really matured a lot in the last 6 months and is usually very cooperative.  He's doing great at preschool and I am so glad he has another year before kindergarten.  He is the friendliest kid and makes friends wherever we go.

He is very interested in Star Wars these days.  He hasn't seen any of the movies but he knows all the characters and whether they are good guys or bad guys. He has a set of Star Wars figurines and he spends hours making up stories about them.  He's also really interested in Thomas trains.  He is a chatterbox and generally talks non-stop. He makes me laugh with the crazy things he says. Yesterday he told me his battery was wearing out and he couldn't answer any of my questions about school anymore. When I went out of town recently he told Josh "Congratulations on being in charge Daddy".

He is a really good big brother and tries to help with Becca whenever she will let him. When she's upset he likes to sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to her which sadly doesn't calm her down like it used to.  He successfully put Becca in timeout recently for opening and spilling my spices everywhere while I ran to get the vacuum

I think I say this every year, but 5 is my favorite age so far. He can be reasoned with which makes life so much easier and he does some big kid things but he still loves to cuddle and asks us to sing a lullabye before bed.

Becca is 19 months old and is generally a sweet little girl but she can definitely throw some serious temper tantrums.  She will do something so sweet like hold the hands of her Winnie the Pooh doll and sing Ring Around the Rosie, but dinner is a nightly battle lately.  She is talking quite a bit and says new words everyday. She has a few phrases that she uses too like "here you go".  She also sticks her hand out and says "stop" or "wait".  She loves to do pretend play with her baby dolls and also loves to color with crayons and markers.  She is very coordinated and likes to ride Ben's scooter.  And of course she loves anything Frozen.  As soon as we get in the car she starts saying "let it go, let it go!".

She is definitely more shy though and will never talk or smile to strangers. She also loves to hold the phone but refuses to talk.  She takes her toy phone and says "hello?".

The last 4 months have been really rough sleep-wise with her getting up extremely early (4ish).  It all started when she got Hand Foot & Mouth and then her molars came in and it just became a habit.  I think (hope!) we are starting to make some progress though.

Becca at 15 months

What a huge difference 3 months has made!  Becca is definitely a toddler now!  Just like Ben, she started walking right around 14 months and hasn't looked back.  She is an explorer and a busy little girl.  She doesn't have much interest in whatever Ben is watching on tv (except for The Wiggles).  Her current favorite inside activity is to open up the lazy susan where my spice containers are and walk around carrying them.  She also likes to play with her baby dolls and will put them in the shopping cart or stroller and push them all over the house.  She wants to be outside all the time and brings me her sandals and my sandals to get her point across.  She likes to play in the driveway and always has a piece of sidewalk chalk in each hand.  Sometimes she draws a little and every once in a while she tries to eat it.  She can climb up the stairs on our slide and will go down the slide all by herself.

She has about 6 consistent words now (Dada, Mama, Bey (Ben), go, hi, bye) and she seems to understand most of what we say and can follow directions (go get shoes and bring them to Mommy,, take your snack to your highchair, etc.).

She started sleeping through the night not long after her first birthday and when that happened she started waking up earlier in the morning.  Oh well.

She is doing really well eating solids and prefers to feed herself.  She just started using a spoon and is pretty good with it.  Pretzels are one of her favorite snacks and she will dip them in guacamole and then lick the guacamole off.

I think this is going to be a very busy summer of learning new things for our little girl!
